High-Stakes Practice Without the Pressure – Why Are Mock Interviews Important?

2025. 07. 30.

Mock interviews play a crucial role in preparing for university admissions, as they boost confidence, reduce stress, and develop essential interview skills. These simulated interview situations allow students to practise their responses to typical and behavioural questions, refine their answers, and receive valuable, constructive feedback during the evaluation process. Mock interviews help identify areas for improvement and provide time to work on these with a mentor or subject specialist well before the real interview, without the pressure of high stakes. They also familiarise students with the unwritten rules and etiquette of interviews, enabling them to present themselves more clearly and confidently – significantly increasing their chances of success in the competitive admissions process.

What is a mock interview?

Since December, admission interviews have been underway at universities across Europe and overseas. Our senior students began this process with Oxbridge interviews in mid-November and many are now participating in online admission interviews for various American and European institutions.

Mock interviews are designed to prepare students for these high-stakes assessments.

Each year nearly hundred of our students take part in these mock interviews, where we evaluate their knowledge and problem-solving abilities before they face the pressures of actual admission interviews. Adapting to the rapidly evolving expectations of universities and the changing higher education decisions of our students, this year we provided tailored preparation not only for Oxbridge’s rigorous and intellectually demanding interviews but also for the personality-driven interviews at American universities and the subject-focused assessments required by Sciences Po and the Central European University (CEU).

Why and How Do These Interviews Differ Across Universities?

Each year, dozens of our students apply to Oxbridge, an increasing number pursue higher education in the United States, and – due to Brexit – many more are choosing universities in the Netherlands and other prestigious European institutions.

At Oxbridge, the emphasis is on a candidate’s teachability. While a solid foundation of subject knowledge is essential, applicants must also demonstrate sharp critical thinking, the ability to engage in intellectual debate, and strong general awareness. In contrast, American universities place significant weight on the applicant’s personality, passions, motivations, and dedication. European universities have highly diverse criteria: some prioritise academic excellence, while others focus more on skills, adaptability, and practical knowledge.

Prior to the mock interviews, we offer preparation sessions to strengthen students’ academic knowledge, skills like image and text analysis, and practical interviewing techniques, ensuring they are well-prepared. Mock interviews offer our students an invaluable opportunity to test their abilities in a realistic but low-stakes environment. These sessions allow them to gain experience, receive detailed feedback, and identify areas for improvement. With the guidance of their mentors, students can refine their skills and address any gaps before the real interviews, giving them a distinct advantage in the highly competitive admissions process.
